The Future??

The future is one of those uncertain things isn’t it? We never know what the next day will bring. Its nearly 4 years since I got knocked off my bike and had an unofficial sabbatical as I recovered against all the odds – praise God, he sometimes does ‘remarkable’ things as a series of medics would comment on my recovery, which went against all medical expectations – I understand medics use the word ‘remarkable’ when perhaps others might use the term ‘miraculous’ – when there is no medical explanation.

Why am I rambling about all this?

Well in my time with the Lord my Bible reading took me to these verses (amongst others):-

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Proverbs 3:5,6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.

The verse in Jeremiah was written to the people of God at a specific time and yet it seems the Holy Spirit keeps applying it to individual lives, and corporate bodies of his people. How wonderful to know that whatever happens in life God has a purpose and a plan, and its a plan for good! Who would have thought that my accident 4 years ago could have been good – but it was in the long term in the way in which it brought blessing to my life and to my ministry – it changed my perspective on life.

Isn’t it great to know that God has a plan and a purpose for your life? For your church? But it doesn’t always seem clear does it?! There are times when you end up feeling ‘well what on earth is going on here? What are you up to Lord?’ That’s when those verses in Proverbs become real – trust the Lord – even when you don’t understand – acknowledge him in everything and he will sort things through – even if we can’t see how! And there’s a wonderful release in doing that – it doesn’t all depend on you! And as we do as that Proverb directs, so we find it to be true! We have a faithful God, who fulfils his promises in his way and in his time, and so we find that he does direct our paths, he does have plans to give us a hope and a future! Praise God!
