Psalm 96:1-4 (English Standard Version)
Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvellous works among all the peoples!
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.

Why does the Lord want us to sing to him? At times we (I?!) must make a horrendous noise and yet he calls us again and again to bring to him a new song – why a new song?

Maybe because the abundance of his blessings are poured on us afresh day by day and its right that we find fresh ways to come and express our thanks to him to lift us out of our familiarity?

Maybe he just likes our creativity?

I’m not a great fan of The Message, but read this in the last couple of days and found it moving my thinking in a number of ways….

Romans 6:22,23 (The Message)

But now that you’ve found you don’t have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.

‘What a surprise!’
One of the biggest struggles for people in coming to faith seems to be a fear of what they will have to give up, perhaps its an unwillingness to yield their lives to another – but what a delight there is when you do! Sin no longer has dominion over our lives, controlling us – its when we give everything to Jesus that we discover its not that we’re having to ‘give things up’ but that actually we no longer need to be controlled by our sinful desires – not that we never sin – it seems to me that the closer I get to God, the more conscious of sin in my life I become….. But this is the blessing, through the blood of Jesus we are cleansed, out right and put on the right track so that life is not limited, but rather expanded and we discover that we can live life to the full in a way we had perhaps not known before.

‘Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death.’ – How poignantly put! – ‘But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.’ Praise God!!

Written supremely, prophetically of Christ, but also now applicable to his body here on earth, the church – to me as a member of his body.
Psalm 40:8 (English Standard Version)
I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart.

Lord, let that be my desire, let me be so steeped in you that your law is within my heart.
