More reflections….

Ages since I’ve shared some thoughts, reflections, prayers, scriptures and quotes from my time with God.

Hope some of these bless, challenge and encourage you as they have me!

“Listen to me, O family of Jacob,
who are called by the name of Israel
and born into the family of Judah.
Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the Lord
and call on the God of Israel.
You don’t follow through on any of your promises,
even though you call yourself the holy city
and talk about depending on the God of Israel,
whose name is the LORD Almighty.”

Isaiah 48:1,2 New Living Translation

How often do we do that?
Make promises to God, talk of plans, talk of our dependence on our faithful God, and then for all our talk, fail to follow through – help us not to fail to follow through at this time.

Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.
1 Timothy 6:17-19 The Message

If ever there was a scripture to speak into our time, surely this must be it – we live in a world obsessed with money, where those ‘with’ money – bankers, footballers and others bandy around figures that others of us find hard to comprehend. We live in a world of extremes – where the poverty and tragedy of Haiti provokes us to give… and where people then boast in that giving…. I received an email recently where the local Conservative party boasted of its event raising £200 for Haiti, whilst not mentioning anything about working to alleviate Haiti’s debt situation – and interestingly, I’m aware of one small local church that took up an extra freewill offering and raised around 7x that amount. They don’t boast about it, just freely give it out of compassion. We live in an upside down world, obsessed with what ‘we have’ today – not wanting to face the fear of what tomorrow may bring. If we want to live life to the full and not depend on things that come and go for our entertainment and our joy, then we need to ‘go after God’. When we do that he then releases us to put the rest of our lives in order. As we know his generosity to us, he enables us to be generous to others (and not need to boast about raising, what is to me, a paltry £200 for the situation in Haiti).

Lord help those working there to bring relief, as the scene drops off our headlines. Help those working to see real debt relief brought to the nation for the future to influence the right people that this might be brought to pass.

“…the word of our God stands forever…”
Isaiah 40:8b

How encouraging, how comforting, in a world that is constantly changing, to know that God’s Word stands forever. Its always relevant, always up to date, always current.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the king of Judah said.
2 Chronicles 32:7,8 New International Version

Father, help me to be a man who speaks words that cause people to gain confidence in you, and confidence to act. Thank you Lord Jesus that by your Spirit you are with us always, whatever we face.

“My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.”
Psalm 62:1

Lord, thank you that you are our source of rest – thank you that you lead us beside still waters, thank you that you restore our souls – thank you that you are our source of salvation, of hope and of joy and you give us a future.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6,7 NLT

A remarkable truth. As we bring our worries to God in prayer and lay them at God’s feet, as we tell him our hopes and our dreams, our fears and our anxieties, and as we remind ourselves of what he’s already done for us and thank him for it, he comes and changes our perspective – we know his peace suddenly invading our presence. As I had a tensed up day yesterday, thank you Lord that as I come and lay things before you this morning I find a peace and a trust in you for the future, for this day, for all this week will bring.

Some remarkable words from St. Patrick. As a church we have a value of putting Jesus at the centre of everything – and I even mentioned that as I preached this morning, but this prayer from St. Patrick goes way beyond that. Pray it and let it be a reality in your life…..

“Christ, as a light, illumine and guide us
Christ as a shield, overshadow us
Christ be before us; Christ be behind us
Christ be under us; Christ above us
Christ on our right and on our left
Christ this day within and about us
Christ, as a light, illumine and guide us.”

Tim Hughes has written a wonderful song which picks up on similar, though different themes – ‘Everything’. You can listen and look at some imagery and words someone has put to the music track on YouTube – loads of copies actually – some better than others!! But I liked the imagery on this one.

Well, enough for now. Have some more great quotes to share from CS Lewis, David Adam and the good book of course on another day.
